JAN Code Generator
Generate valid 13-digit JAN/EAN-13 barcodes with the correct GS1 check digit. Works for Amazon Japan, Rakuten, Yahoo Shopping, and Shopify.
JAN (Japanese Article Number) is technically identical to EAN-13. It's a 13-digit code that uses a GS1 Japan company prefix starting with 45 or 49, followed by an item reference and a check digit.
Select "EAN-13" in the generator below, enter your 13-digit JAN code, or use "Random" to generate one. The check digit is computed automatically and passes GS1 Mod 10 validation.
For official retail sales, register a company prefix from GS1 Japan (Distribution Code Center). For internal use, testing, and prototypes, free-generated JAN codes are sufficient.
FAQ
What's the difference between JAN and EAN-13?
Technically none. JAN is the name used in Japan for EAN-13 codes that start with the GS1 Japan prefix (45 or 49).
Do I need a GS1 Japan prefix?
For official sales (Amazon Japan, Rakuten, retail), yes. For internal use, testing, or prototypes, a free-generated JAN code is fine.
Is there a short JAN format?
Yes. JAN-8 (equivalent to EAN-8) is for small packaging. Register it separately from GS1 Japan.
